Illicit drug use in the country is at an all-time high. According to recent studies conducted by the National Center of Addiction and Substance Abuse or NCASA at Columbia University, the emotional strain and stress caused by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, combined with bioterrorism threats, have given rise to an increasing number of people in the United States looking for alcohol and drug abuse treatment.
The study shows that admission for drugs and alcohol treatment increased by 10% to 12% all over the country. The increased need for substance treatment corresponds to a higher consumption of alcohol and drugs. The bad news is, this increase in substance use shows up in companies.

What workers know
Most employees know that illegal substance used on the job can create a lot of problems, and that is will have an adverse effect on their job performance, safety, as well as other work-related activities. What workers want
According to surveys, 95% of employees usually favor illegal substance screening of employees in safety-sensitive jobs. Majority of workers or 69% also favors testing of office workers; 92% of health workers; and 81% of factory workers. And 78% favor screening them in their own occupation. Workers want a safe work environment. Drug abuse is considered as a significant factor when it comes to an unsafe environment.
Drugs and alcohol are responsible for at least one in six on-the-job deaths. According to the National Safety Council, 80% work-related injuries are not the users but the people or workers around them, innocent bystanders getting injured because their co-workers are either high on drugs or drunk while at work.
